The Telltale Signs of Needed Heat Pump or Furnace Replacement
You may be happy as long as your home feels warm or, if you’re trying to save energy, as long as you’re comfortable while wearing two sweaters. What you may not realize is how much your heat pump or furnace is costing you no matter how low you have the temperature set. Heating is one of your biggest bills for the year and even relatively small energy efficiency gains can lead to saving hundreds of dollars. Further, those repair visits start to add up and may not be needed as frequently as you might think.
Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Heat Pump or Furnace
If you’re considering whether to replace your heating system, consider whether you’ve been having any of the following problems. If you have, it may be time to invest in a new unit.
- Bigger than average heating bills. Talk to your neighbors about their heating bills or see if your power company posts an average for your area. If you spend significantly more, it may be time for an upgrade. Most new heating systems are 30 to 50% more efficient than units from just a decade ago.
- Repeated need for repairs. Extending the life of your appliances makes good financial sense to some degree. However, there comes a time when the repairs are so expensive and so frequent that you might be better off spending the money on a new unit.
- Heat isn’t as strong as you’d like. During the coldest parts of winter, your home may not be as warm as you’d like. Your heating system may be undersized due to your home builder trying to cut costs or because you’ve expanded your home. It also may just be wearing out.
- It makes financial sense. There are still tax breaks available for upgrading to energy efficient appliances, and heating systems often go on sale outside of peak heating season. If you can find a great deal, it may be worth it to make the switch earlier than planned.
