Should I Really Be Concerned About My Home’s Indoor Air Quality?

Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors—and of that time, about ten hours a day is spent at home, sleeping, eating, watching television, or just hanging out with your family.

This enclosed environment indoors tends to concentrate pollutants instead of dispersing them. This concentration of contaminants can pose a serious risk to everyone, but is especially dangerous to young children, the elderly, and those with chronic health and respiratory issues.

What Contaminants Affect Indoor Air Quality?

A broad range of contaminants can influence indoor air quality. Here are some of the more common indoor air pollutants in the Triangle region:

Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that is emitted naturally from the earth. It tends to concentrate in the substructure of houses, and while it is almost always present outdoors, indoor concentrations can be much higher and, in abnormally high concentrations, can even be deadly.

Radon is the second greatest cause of lung cancer after smoking. It is colorless and odorless, so it is not detectable by sight or smell.

Mold and Mildew

This one is certainly no surprise. The humid North Carolina climate is ideal for spreading mold and mildew spores. They can grow inside walls, under floors and in HVAC ducts, condensation pans and on evaporator coils.

Chemical Fumes

Known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), vaporized fumes from household cleaners, paints, carpets, and fabrics can linger in the air. Over time, they can become concentrated and unhealthy to breathe.

Combustion Gases

When combustion occurs, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide are released into the air. This is often the single greatest source of indoor pollutants. Combustion sources in homes include:

  • Stoves
  • Fireplaces
  • Furnaces
  • Space heaters
  • Water heaters

Pesticides and Pest Droppings

Chemicals used to control pests are poison. They can build up within your home and the air, creating health problems.

Hand in hand with pest control poisons are the droppings left behind by rats, mice, roaches and other pests. The rule of thumb is that if you have one, you have the other.

Dust, Dander, and Dust Mites

Even the cleanest homes have dust. If you have pets you probably also have pet dander in the air. Dust and dander contribute to the presence of dust mites. All of these contaminants create problems for those with allergies, asthma and other respiratory issues.

Eliminate Concerns with a Professional Air Quality Inspection

While some of these indoor pollutants may be noticeable, many are not. You may see or smell the presence of mold or mildew but you won’t know if there is radon present or if combustion gases have reached dangerous levels in your home. The best way to eliminate concerns is to have a professional conduct an indoor air quality inspection.

We offer an indoor air quality check-up FREE with our HVAC maintenance agreement. Once we’ve performed this inspection, we’ll determine which indoor air quality services would best benefit your Raleigh or Durham area home.

The IAQ solutions we offer after this check-up include:

  1. High efficient filters & air duct sealing– reduces or eliminates dust particles and airborne allergens (Phase 1)
  2. Ultraviolet lights & air purifiers– reduces or eliminates germs and infectious agents  (Phase 2)
  3. PCO type air cleaners & carbon-based systems– reduces or eliminates odors and chemical gases (Phase 3)

At Air Experts, we also offer fresh air intakes, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers. All three of these indoor air quality solutions play a big role in keeping your air healthy, comfortable, and safe!
