How a Heat Pump Works

If you are looking for total home comfort, a heat pump is a great system. Heat pumps work all year long to both cool your home in the summer and heat your home in the winter. In the Raleigh-Durham area where winters can be pretty mild, they are an excellent choice if you are looking for an energy efficient way to heat your home.

How Heat Pumps Work

The way a heat pump works is quite simple—they simply transfers air in and out via an outside unit and your home’s HVAC vents. The outside unit includes refrigerant-filled coils that work to both help heat and cool your home.

How a Heat Pump Works During Heating Season

Heat pumps are commonly used to pull the heat out of the outside air. This air is sent through the heat pump’s system where it is warmed to a comfortable temperature; this heated air is then pumped into your home.

How a Heat Pump Works During Cooling Season

The thing many people don’t know is that a heat pump can be reversed. During the summer, it takes the hot air from your home and transfers this hot air to the outside of your home. Once this heated air is released, your pump goes through the process again and again until your home feels cool and comfortable.

Benefits of a Heat Pump

A heat pump works by using a much smaller amount of energy than your usual HVAC system would. It takes this small amount of energy and uses it to move heat from one spot to another. While a heat pump may cost more than an air conditioner or a furnace, in the long-run it can actually save you money on your energy bills—which makes it worth it!
