Troubleshooting Your Heat Pump to Avoid Unnecessary Costs

family-footer

When your heat pump isn’t working properly, your first impulse may be to call for professional repair. Before reaching for the phone, however, take a few minutes to try some of these heat pump troubleshooting techniques. You may be able to get your heat pump working again without the cost of a repair visit.

  • Heat pump won’t work at all: If the heat pump won’t turn on at all, it could be an electrical problem. Make sure the system is turned on, plugged in to an active electrical outlet, and is receiving power. Check circuit breakers on the equipment and at your main breaker panel and reset any breakers that have been tripped.
  • Heat pump cycles incorrectly: During normal operations, the heat pump will cycle off and on in response to indoor temperature changes. Improper cycling could be caused by incorrect temperature settings at the thermostat. Also make sure the thermostat is mounted in a spot where it can get an accurate reading of room temperature. If direct sunlight hits the thermostat, for example, it will register incorrectly high temperatures.
  • Heat pump produces insufficient or improper cooling or heating: Make sure the heat pump is set to the proper mode to supply either heating or cooling. Also check the temperature settings to ensure they’re appropriate for the season. Check the system’s air filter to see if it’s dirty or clogged and, if it is, replace with a new air filter. Make sure vents and registers are clear of obstructions.
  • Heat pump makes odd noises: Loose covers, access doors and other components can produce banging or rattling sounds in your heat pump. As ductwork expands and contracts, it can make sounds that may be unfamiliar to you. Make sure the sounds you’re hearing aren’t just noises from elsewhere in your home being echoed and amplified through the ductwork.
