Should You Replace Your AC and Furnace at the Same Time?

post img

The question of whether or not you should replace your AC and furnace at the same time is one that many homeowners are asking. Some may say that it’s better to do them separately, while others believe that doing both together will save more money in the long run. So what are some of the pros and cons of replacing these appliances at the same time? Let’s take a closer look!

What Do These Units Do?

As you know, the furnace in your home is what provides the heat and your air conditioner provides cool air. But while these may seem like independent components, they are connected. Here’s how:

When it comes to air conditioners, they can either be a packaged system or a split system. Split air conditioner systems have an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is the part that contains the compressor and condenser coil, while the indoor unit not only ensures airflow but also distributes warm air from the furnace. The blower motor that is shared between the two systems depends on both of them being efficient for them to work effectively together.

Why You Should Replace Your AC and Furnace at the Same Time

Since the blower motor is shared between the two systems, replacing one without the other could lead to a mismatch of your entire HVAC system. Though the life span of each unit is vastly different, having either unit over 15 years old can compromise the efficiency of your HVAC system if only one of them is replaced and not the other. Not replacing both units simultaneously can also lead to premature system failure for your newer unit.

There’s also an opportunity to save on replacement costs. Replacing just your air conditioner or furnace alone can be expensive, whereas having them replaced together can equal a lesser bundled cost instead.

How Do You Know When To Replace Your AC and Furnace System?

Unless your furnace is less than ten years old, it’s a good investment to replace it at the same time as your air conditioner. Other reasons include:

  • Upgrading to a new air conditioner with a SEER over 16 and your furnace is over 15 years old.
  • Your furnace is close to the end of its life span and needs to be replaced soon.
  • You want easier maintenance, fewer repairs, and not needing a replacement for several years.

Overall, replacing both your air conditioning and furnace unit gives you the most efficiency for your investment. But with the way the components work together, it can be challenging to take on the replacements on your own. That’s why Air Experts are here to help!
