What Is the Significance of Being NATE-Certified?

At Air Experts, we’re proud to have 100% NATE-certified technicians on our staff providing superior service across the triangle. You’ve likely heard other HVAC companies touting that their technicians are “NATE-certified” as well. But what does that actually mean?

A need for reliable HVAC professionals

HVAC systems are complex, expensive pieces of machinery with a multitude of intricate moving parts. Many homeowners are experts in their own professions, but few know much about HVAC repair. That’s why they look for reliable, knowledgeable HVAC companies to call on when their heating or cooling system breaks down.

An HVAC guessing game

If you’re unfamiliar with HVAC systems, parts, repairs, requirements, and best practices, it’s hard to know if you’re getting good service. For all you know, your HVAC technician might be taking shortcuts, doing poor work, or making unnecessary repairs. In the past, hiring an HVAC contractor was a guessing game. Questionable work, recurring problems, and oversights were frustratingly common.

What is NATE?

The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) was founded in 1997 to give homeowners a sure way to know that they were hiring a qualified HVAC or refrigeration technician. Founded by industry leaders, it sets the standards for the knowledge and skills that an HVAC technician should possess to be considered an expert.

What it takes to be NATE-certified

NATE certification means that your technician voluntarily underwent rigorous training and passed a formidable exam. The exam tests technicians’ knowledge of construction and electrical skills, as well as scientific theory relating to HVAC systems. It also includes safety essentials and tool usage. The test ensures that a technician knows how to achieve specific home comfort goals across a variety of circumstances. NATE-certified technicians complete continuing education and retake tests periodically to maintain their NATE certification, ensuring that they stay up to date on the latest advancements. They can also add additional certificates and qualifications by taking more tests. Since it takes a lot to become and remain NATE-certified, hiring a NATE-certified technician secures many benefits for the homeowner.

NATE certification is not legally required

It’s important to note that NATE certification is voluntary. That means that there are plenty of non-NATE-certified technicians to watch out for. It also means that those who are NATE-certified are true professionals that are invested in their career and committed to improving their skills continuously. It’s also important to be aware that HVAC companies can advertise themselves as “NATE-certified” if 50% or more of their technicians hold the certification. If you’re not sure that all of their technicians are certified, make sure to specifically request a NATE-certified technician for your HVAC repair, replacement, or installation job.
