The 4 Levels of IAQ Protection: Improve Your Indoor Air Quality Today!

post img

As the leaves turn orange, yellow, red, and brown and the sun sets earlier, we slowly move more indoors. In the fall and winter, checking your home’s indoor air quality is more important since we are more susceptible to indoor pollution because we spend more time indoors. Indoor pollution can be very harmful as indoor concentrations of pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor ones.

Symptoms of Poor Indoor Air Quality

  1. Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat
  2. Headaches
  3. Dizziness
  4. Fatigue
  5. Aggravated asthma and allergies

It is hard to identify if you have indoor pollutants since these symptoms could be from a passing cold. If you consistently get these symptoms in a specific space, it could indicate an indoor air quality problem.

Similarly, your home’s humidity can affect the quality of your air. If you find that you constantly have dry eyes and dry skin, as well as creaky wood, it could mean that your home’s air is arid. Low humidity not only can dry out you and your wooden flooring, but it can also increase the prevalence of airborne diseases.

Some Extra IAQ Tips:

  • Schedule HVAC Maintenance: Healthy indoor air starts with good circulation. The heating and cooling system, with ductwork, should properly move conditioned air throughout the home. When the heating and cooling system isn’t performing, or when ductwork is compromised, the air in your home will be stagnant and could become a breeding ground for germs and other infectious agents.  Air Experts recommends a maintenance visit twice a year to make sure your system is running efficiently and circulating a healthy amount of air throughout the home.
  • Change Air Filters: While air is circulating throughout the home, make sure it’s passing through a filter to catch particulates. At a minimum, we recommend changing your return filters once a month during peak season and every three months in the off-season. Every family is different. Check the filter often until you know how long you can typically go before you’re not able to pull the filter out and see light through it. If you have carpet & two husky fur babies – your filters will last about three weeks.
  • Have A Functioning CO Detector: It’s now code to have CO detectors installed with gas heating systems. Most of you already know the dangers of carbon monoxide, so it is important that you have a CO detector installed in or near bedrooms. Remember to check CO and smoke detectors regularly and add fresh batteries at the beginning of the heating season.
